Sounds like it's time for a new impellar (they often wear or the hole they are in wears-or both). This causes the impellar to make some wonderful noises. The problem with getting a new impellar is the price tag. It's often as much as getting a whole new filter and with buying a whole new filter you get new filter pads too!

What kind of a noise is it? If it is a whistling noise coming from the tank itself, all you need to do is to widen some or all of the wholes on the spray bar. This just happened to me a few days ago, and this is how I fixed it.

this is not a canister filter.. its a HOB..so i dont have a spray bar.. i think it is the impeller.. would look to get a new hob or a canister..

Replace it with an Aquaclear. I have found them to be the best HOB on the market. You can usually find them for a reasonable price and replacement parts are easy to find.

If it makes noise the bearings for the impeller shaft are no good. Of you're going to buy a new filter. I will take that one and give you five bucks for it. I fix mine unconventionaly wrapping the impeller bearing ends with rubber tape cut to size it is not difficult to do but it is tedious.

Teflon Tape worked for me very well. Wrap the rubber bushings with 2 layers at a time until the noise is gone.

I did get tired of this and got a Fluval C-4. Much happier with it. AquaClears are better as well.
